The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, Center for Clinical Data Science

At the Center for Clinical Data Science (CLINDA), Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University, a PhD stipend in spatial privacy for health data is available for appointment from September 1, 2026, or soon hereafter. The duration of the Stilling is three years.

Your work tasks

At the intersection of mathematics, statistics, and public health, this PhD project explores how we can learn from sensitive health data without compromising individual privacy. Using rich, nationwide Danish health registry data, the project focuses on spatial data, such as disease maps and medical imaging, where Lokation can both reveal crucial patterns and pose privacy risks. You will develop and study privacy-preserving methods (e.g., differential privacy and synthetic data) that allow researchers to detect trends, identify hotspots, and support decision‑making while ensuring that no individual can be identified. The project tackles the fundamental challenge: how to balance data utility with strong privacy guarantees in complex spatial data. This is a chance to work on mathematically challenging problems with real‑world impact, contributing to the safe and responsible use of health data.

The research will be performed in close collaboration with the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University.

Your competencies

You must have documented strong qualifications in mathematics and statistics as well as excellent oral and written English language skills. Experience with spatial statistics is an advantage.

Qualification requirements

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for alLokation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19, 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time. As part of the PhD study, you are required to complete PhD courses corresponding to 30 ECTS, gain experience with teaching or other forms of knowledge dissemination and complete an external research stay outside of Aalborg University, preferably 3‑6 months at a foreign research institution.

Who we are

CLINDA is a multidisciplinary center dedicated to bridging clinical practice and data science. It comprises three research groups: (1) Clinical AI, (2) Bioinformatics and Statistics, and (3) Data Science Methods. The PhD student will be part of the Data Science Methods group, which has a strong research focus on privacy‑preserving techniques.
