Job Description

Are you ready to make a difference for a sustainable future through bacterial metabolic engineering? The Systems Environmental Microbiology (SEM) group at DTU (BRIGHT) seeks a candidate for a 3-year, fully‑funded PhD project. In this research programme, the PhD student will apply state‑of‑the‑art synthetic biology and genome and metabolic engineering to enable environmental bacteria to grow on various one‑carbon (C1) compounds. C1 biotechnology is a key area of interest in BRIGHT.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

The aim of the PhD project is to design, build and evolve novel pathways for efficient utilisation of C1 feedstock in the environmental bacterium Pseudomonas putida. The engineered bacteria will be used as a sustainable cell factory for the biosynthesis of value‑added chemicals. To this end, the PhD candidate will apply computational methods, such as flux balance analysis and genome‑scale metabolic modelling, to design synthetic metabolic modules. Furthermore, the candidate will engineer complex genotypes and conduct adaptive laboratory evolution experiments. The candidate will work in an international team, contribute creatively, develop their project, collaborate with colleagues and find synergies. They are expected to communicate findings at international conferences and in high‑impact journals. The candidate must have a two‑year master’s degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent.

Key Selection Criteria
  • Hands‑on experience in genetic engineering, preferably of Pseudomonas species.
  • Experience in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology and genome‑scale metabolic modelling.
  • Experience in purification of proteins and setting up enzyme cascades in vitro is desirable.
  • Previous experience in projects related to microbial C1 assimilation is a strong advantage.
  • Enthusiastic and self‑driven, independent thinking and strong social skills.
  • Team‑player capabilities.
  • Passionate about science and biosustainability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education.

We Offer

DTU is a leading technical university globally recognised for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. Salary and Appointment Terms

The appointment is for 3 years, starting 1 June 2026. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union in accordance with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

Application Procedure

Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 6 April 2026 (23:59 Danish time) as one PDF file containing all required materials: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, grade transcripts and BSc/MSc diploma (in English), official grading scale description, and two references. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. You may apply before obtaining your master’s degree but cannot begin before receiving it.

Eligibility

About BRIGHT

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition (BRIGHT) is a major initiative based at DTU that aims to accelerate the development of biosolutions and strengthen the bio‑based economy. BRIGHT serves as a hub for academic and industrial partners working together to unlock the potential of bioproduction. BRIGHT focuses on three main areas: Sustainable materials (developing bio‑based alternatives to fossil‑derived materials), Microbial foods (innovating food production through microbial technologies), and Microorganisms for net‑zero agriculture (creating solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture). The goal is to develop and scale innovative biosolutions within these areas, ultimately creating sustainable and competitive alternatives to fossil‑based products and processes that can make significant contributions to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

Technology for People

DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
