The Department of Electronic Systems at The Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for a Stilling as research assistant or postdoctoral researcher in the field of Hardware & Measurement Platforms, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Stilling is available for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension.

In electronic engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and societal impact. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 people, of which about 90 are PhD students, and around 40 % of all employees are international. It has more than 600 students in its BSc and MSc programs, which are based on AAU’s problem‑based learning model. The department leverages its unique research infrastructure and lab facilities to conduct world‑leading fundamental and applied research in communication, networks, control systems, AI, sound, cyber security, and robotics. It plays an active role in translating innovations into applications in close partnership with industry worldwide.

Responsibilities

You will join the Grand Solution project "ASMADI – AI based Spectrum Monitoring for Anomaly Detection and Identification" to explore AI‑driven solutions for onboard spectrum monitoring, enabling autonomous detection, classification, and filtering of RF signals in real‑time on satellites and drones. The key responsibility of the Stilling is to develop custom measurement platforms from discrete hardware components. The role involves:

  • Hardware integration – assembling measurement systems from individual components (e.g., signal generators, spectrum analyzers, antennas, mixers, SDRs, FPGAs, ADCs/DACs)
  • Test system validation – characterising the platform’s own performance (noise figure, dynamic range, bandwidth, linearity, stability, measurement uncertainty)
  • Practical measurements for application examples: mmWave RF signal characterisation, radar sensing, quantum sensing.
Research Assistant responsibilities

Develop technical solutions aligned with the consortium’s objectives and contribute to related research areas under supervision.

Postdoctoral Researcher responsibilities

Initiate and advance independent research that supports the project and contributes to the broader scientific field, including publishing results and potentially co‑supervising students.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should have excellent grades, a hands‑on and problem‑solving mindset, and experience working with RF/test & measurement equipment. It is desirable that you have strong knowledge in at least two of the following research directions:

  • RF hardware integration, e.g., mixers, amplifiers, SDR, FPGAs
  • Measurement system characterization, e.g., validating platform performance such as dynamic range, linearity, phase noise, and measurement uncertainty
  • Automated test & data acquisition, e.g., using Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW for instrument control and automated measurement routines
  • Calibration & uncertainty analysis, e.g., system error calibration for mmWave, radar, or quantum sensing measurements
Academic Requirements

Appointment as a research assistant requires an academic qualification at the master’s level. Appointment as a postdoctoral researcher requires an academic qualification at the PhD level.

About the research group

The research group is recognised internationally as a strong researcher in radio propagation and antenna measurements. It pioneered over‑the‑air antenna testing for single‑antenna handsets, which later became an international standard, and has influenced the testing of multi‑antenna devices in 4G and 5G radios. The group is well known for its strong relationship with industry and experimentally based research, which is supported by world‑class laboratory facilities.

Salary and terms of employment

The employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (in Danish) and protocol on certain terms of employment of academic staff at universities (in Danish).
